Day 230: Jeremiah 38-40, Psalms 74, 79

Jeremiah reminds me a little bit of Paul with all the persecution.  But he just keeps going, and going, and going.

King Zedekiah can't seem to make up his mind.  He allows Jeremiah to be thrown into a cistern to die and then he allows him to be pulled back out.  Then he has a secret conversation with him to seek his counsel.  Make up your mind!!

It is a very shrewd strategy that the Babylonians use.  The capture or kill all the rich and powerful people and leave the poor as new landowners.  This ensures that they will be loyal to the Babylonians and will not rebel against them.  Interesting.

The Babylonian commander that released Jeremiah acknowledges God and his plan, but yet is not a follower of God.  How true is this of people today I wonder.

Psalm 74, as read in light of the capture by Babylon, makes me see how so many of us view God sometimes.  Here is this God who showed mercy for so many years while the people kept on sinning.  His patience so outlasts anything we could ever extend.  And then as as soon as judgment begins, they wonder why he is slow to intervene on their behalf.  We want it both ways!
