The rich young man's immediate response to selling everything he has is what jumps out at me this time. "When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was a man of great wealth." I used to hold on to my stuff much tighter, having not grown up with a lot of extra. But now giving doesn't make me sad. In fact I think I could give a whole lot more away than I do and it would be exciting! I read a great book by Randy Alcorn called the Treasure Principle and it has really changed my views on earthly possessions and money.
The people were probably not happy to hear that Zacchaeus was both a son of Abraham and lost. To them heritage was everything. In Christ's kingdom, your earthly ancestry is irrelevant. God has no grandchildren, only children is a true statement.
The parable of the king's 10 servants is always a convicting one. What am I doing with all the resources the king has given me? He is returning.....how will he respond with how I have used his resources?
