I guess all that strikes me today is the sheer vastness of the promise land as the Israelites began to disperse and settle in. So many towns and places! And the fact that after 40 years of a common experience, the tribes still remained very separate entities.
As I kept reading about the cities that were destroyed and all the ravages of the wars, I wondered how many people died in these wars against the Israelites. They died because of God's judgement and their practice of worshipping false gods. By this point all the cities and kings had heard about the Israelites and knew that God was with them but refused to recognize God as the one true God and worship Him. Hopefully we won't be stubborn like these people and will put our faith and trust in God and worship only Him. There is a time for those who refuse to believe when it will be too late and God can only respond one way with His judgement.
