How amazing that not one Israelite was killed in the battle with the Midianites! War was so messy then, and the fact that one side totally wiped out the other with no casualties is proof that God was involved. Since this battle was essentially Moses' swan song (31:2), all the sweeter.
I guess the Gadites and the Reubanites were done. They were ready to settle down and call it quits. I guess they thought they were close enough to the promise land and this property looked pretty appealing. Understandable. But at least they came around and were willing to help the other tribes conquer Canaan before they totally moved in.
