Day 84: Joshua 9-11
I personally think the treaty with the Gibeonites should have been null and void since it was made under false pretenses. I guess that type of contingency didn't exist then. I guess it is no different than Jacob tricking Isaac into giving him the blessing. When the Gibeonites called out for help later on, I would think Joshua was tempted to just let them be conquered. His response showed his character.

I think this should remind us to pray more about the decisions we are making and not just jump in. The Isrealites didn't bring God into the situation and thought they knew best, even thought they were doing a good think by helping the people they thought were from far off, but even the best intentions can put us in a bad situation.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate that beyond everything else the Israelites were people of their word in the not destroying the Gibeonites, not matter what the circumstances turned out to be, they kept their word. Just as God kept His word to them. Too often I look for an excuse to get out of a commitment and as much as possible, we should keep our word.
